Today's society is characterised by an abundance of food, about a third of which is wasted. At the same time, we see people in a vulnerable social position, (social, psychological, financial or intellectual) often have limited access to healthy and varied food. Poverty and loneliness are important factors here and are a growing problem in our society. As initiators of the Food Hub, we want to tackle this unfair distribution.
Therefore, in September 2023, a new initiative was born thanks to the cooperation between Huis van Compassie, VoedselSurplus, Plan_A, municipality of Nijmegen and Stichting Doen
What do we do?
Our core activity is collecting surplus food from local farms, urban gardens and supermarkets. This food is then distributed by volunteers to social eating initiatives and neighbourhood restaurants. Here everyone, regardless of background or financial situation, can enjoy a healthy meal. Every week, we collect an average of 500 kg of food, providing 1,500 meals for 25 social eating initiatives.
Join in!
At the FoodHub Nijmegen, we believe in the power of compassion, both for food and for each other. Whether you want to become a volunteer, donor, supplier, or social restaurant, your contribution makes a difference. Together, we build a fair, sustainable future. Together, let's fight against food waste and poverty, because together we are stronger.
