Food Hub

Working together to tackle food waste and promote healthy, local food for everyone. That is what the Food Hub stands for. Far more food is produced than is eaten, and a great deal of good food goes to waste. That is a shame, because there are plenty of places where it would be welcomed with open arms. The VoedselHub brings these two together.

What do we do?

We save between 500 and 1,000 kilos of food per week
30 local suppliers
20 dedicated volunteers
40 community kitchens and neighbourhood restaurants
More than 100,000 meals a year

Suppliers

We work with around thirty local suppliers, ranging from urban allotments and no-dig gardens to supermarkets and wholesalers. We collect food from them on a regular basis and on an ad hoc basis, starting from as little as one crate. As a result, we receive a wide variety of produce every week, for example from Eetmeerbosch, Herenboeren GrootStal-Lingezegen, Gelukkige Groentes, various Plus supermarkets and Hanos.

Community kitchens

Community kitchens are dining initiatives centred on connection. You can eat there for free or at a low cost. We now supply around forty community kitchens and neighbourhood restaurants throughout Nijmegen, ranging from soup in the community centre to a full meal. Examples include Van Tuin tot Bord, Vilanova and Kruispunt, as well as many other places in the neighbourhoods.

Contact

Do you have a question, would you like to get involved, or do you have any spare food to donate? Email us! We’re here to help every working day except Thursdays.

What is the Food Club?

We want to introduce the whole of Nijmegen to community kitchens. That’s why we’re setting up the Food Club: a new online platform that shows which community kitchens are in Nijmegen and when they’re open. Places where you can eat together for a low price. Our aim is a Nijmegen where everyone knows where a place at the table is set for them. The Food Club is still new and we’re building it together. Leeks from farm to fork

What happens between the moment a leek is pulled from the ground and the day it ends up on someone’s plate? De Gelderlander followed that journey and delved into the story behind the Food Hub.
